Simmondsia chinensis
Jojoba
OVERVIEW:
Simmondsia chinensis is an evergreen shrub used in xerophytic landscapes throughout the Desert Southwest and it’s so unique it is the only species in the Simmondsiaceae Family. Although it is an evergreen, Jojoba will drop its leaves during periods of high drought. The oil and wax from its seed is widely used in many industries. The oil from the Jojoba seed has a viscosity index much higher than that of petroleum oil. This means it can be used as a high temperature, high pressure lubricant. The stability of jojoba oil makes it attractive to the electronic and computer industries. The wax from the seed is also widely used in the cosmetics industry. It can be applied directly to the skin for acne, psoriasis, sunburn, and chapped skin. It is also used topically to encourage the regrowth of hair in people who are balding.
