Ligustrum japonicum ‘Texanum’

Abstract:

Ligustrum japonicum 'Texanum' is an evergreen dense, compact shrub with thick, round, waxy leaves that are glossy green above and whitish underneath. They are also made into a standard tree by removing the lower branches to establish a single trunk. Fragrant white flowers bloom in late spring to early summer and are then followed by blue-black berries. The blooms are a good food source for bees, which are highly attracted to them. Texanum grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 30 years. Plant in full sun or partial shade and water regularly with good drainage, being aware that it does not tolerate standing water well. Best pruned in early to mid-summer after bloom. Propagation is usually done by seed; however, softwood cuttings will root under mist rather easily.
