Jacaranda mimosifolia

Black Poui

OVERVIEW:

Jacaranda mimosifolia is a sub-tropical deciduous tree that grows to heights of over 50 feet (in tropical or lush climates). Its features include bright green bipinnate compound leaves with tiny leaflets. Bark is grey-brown and smooth when the tree is young but eventually becomes scaly. Purple flowers are grouped in 12-inch panicles and appear in spring and early summer, and last for up to two months. Blooms are followed by woody seed pods which contain numerous flat, winged seeds. Train this tree vigorously when young to promote a standard form, otherwise jacaranda will naturally become multi-trunk. Plant in well-drained sandy soils with full direct sun light and water regularly, especially during the summer to promote a dense canopy. **NOTE: in arid climates, jacarandas may struggle unless saturated with water (think flood irrigation).
