Euphorbia antisyphillitica
Candelilla
OVERVIEW:
Euphorbia antisyphillitica can be found across multiple states in the Chihuahuan desert, including southwestern New Mexico, eastern Texas and northern Mexico. Euphorbia antisyphillitica was given the common name Candelilla, meaning “little candle”, due to the high quality waxy substance that can be extracted after boiling. In order to hold water for longer periods of time and more efficiently long and more efficiently, the plant produces that waxy layer on the outside of its stems. This leafless succulent gets no larger than 2-3’ tall and 3-5’ wide in a cluster. Don’t be fooled by its size, as it is toxic to both humans and animals.
